Open a Bank Account to Speed Receiving Your IRS Economic Impact Payments

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has been working to develop resources that will make it easier for consumers without a bank account to find a bank that can open an account online without going into a branch: https://www.fdic.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments/

If you do not have an account, many banks offer ways to open one remotely – online or through a mobile app – without going to a bank branch. As long as you have a computer or a smartphone with access to the Internet, it is easy to get started.   Learn more about mobile banking.

Once you open your account, you can then provide the information to the IRS to receive the economic impact payment payments electronically through the IRS portal

The FDIC webpage links directly to the Bank On Coalition’s list of banks that offer remote account opening with a $0 balance in anticipation of the Treasury deposit.  The webpage also links to the ABA’s list of banks that offer remote account opening all across the country (developed in response to the COVID-19 situation), along with additional resources for consumers.
